Summer events for 2020

Pop up Sports activities – Summer Programme

· Popping up outdoors during the summer holidays, every weekday at a different local venue, with sports coaches to organise fun, informal physical activities and encourage children to join in and be active.

· Come along anytime from Monday 27th July onwards between 11am and 3pm each weekday. Children can receive a free packed lunch for taking part. No need to book in advance just drop by and join in. Activities will be outside without facilities, please wear clothing and footwear to take part in informal sport and younger children will need parental supervision.

· Activities may be cancelled at short notice or delayed depending on the weather on the day.

From 27th July until 28th August:

Mondays – Elisabethville, grassed area adjacent to Lansbury Drive, Birtley, DH3 1HW

Tuesdays – Highfield, grassed area adjacent to Whinfield Terrace, Highfield, NE39 2JY

Wednesdays – Kibblesworth, in Kibblesworth Park, Gateshead NE11 0XP

Thursdays – Stargate Park, Gateshead NE40 3DX

Fridays – The Mount community association, Galloping Green Rd, Eighton Banks, Gateshead NE9 7YA

 

CrEATe 2020

· If you live in Gateshead your family can take part in CrEATe 2020

· No need to be bored this summer, there’s lots you can do!

· FREE Summer Fun Arts and Active sessions for Gateshead families.

· Your family or bubble group of up to 4 children and 2 adults, can take part in a fun outing with a creative arts walk, an arts workshop and a Free packed lunch for every member of your group plus an extra special take away arts pack to try out even more creative ideas at home.

· Six amazing creative artists are bringing their talents to families who live in Gateshead this summer. They have designed fabulous activities that keep a safe distance and are outdoors as much as possible. These sessions will happen whatever the weather, so please wear the right clothes for the day. The walk and the picnic are outdoor activities, only the workshop will happen inside.

· You can bring up to 6 people from your family/group bubble and can book up for more than one activity day when you ring up. Places will be given on a first come first serve basis.

Here’s how to book.:

Choose the place you want to go to.
Choose the day you want. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday
Choose the time slot you want. 9:30am, 10:30am, 11.30am, 1pm

Tell us the names of everyone in your group and the ages of the children.
Tell us about anyone with a specific diet or allergies and who they are.
Tell us how to contact you to confirm the booking, text, email, or postal address
The workshop will go ahead despite the weather but just in case there are any changes or we have to cancel, we will need a telephone number to contact you as quickly as possible.
To keep everyone safe:

Please don’t attend if anyone in your group is unwell, has a temperature or a dry persistent cough
Stay 2m away from anyone not in your bubble
It is advisable to wear a mask while indoors at the workshop
Wash your hands regularly
Please note the use of toilets will only be made available in an emergency and you will have to ask for a key.

Week One: Chopwell / Highfield

Print Making in the forest with professional print maker, Ali Wilkes

The clothes we wear and all around our homes are examples of design and inspired print. In this workshop you can learn some skills for fabric printing. You will create your own printed fabric pieces using pre-cut lino stamps to embellish in your own time with your take home pack. The take home pack will include an interesting number of ideas to make further patterns and some of the tools needed to do them. The walk in the woods will help you to explore patterns and natural forms inspired by the trees and plants around and create an original art work to treasure.

Week Two: Dunston / Teams

Play Ukelele, a few chords to get you started with professional musician and tutor, Stewart Angus

Making music and playing along to some well known songs, is a life skill. It helps you to laugh and learn together. Have a happy hour learning to tune your Ukelele and the basic chords for some much loved songs. We have a Ukelele for everyone to have a go (they will be cleaned after every use). At the end of the session your family will be allowed to take one Ukelele home and some more tunes to build your own family tune book. The walk will be a treasure hunt along the Riverside to find the chords for a tune. Find all the chords and put them in the right order and you will have a special tune to practice on your own when you get home.

Week Three: Birtley / Barley Mow

ARTiculate, create art inspired by living in Barley Mow with professional artist, Paul Merrick

Navigating your way through the surrounding landscape, a walk will be your inspiration. By looking, listening, mapping, marking, collecting, scribbling and documenting a walk you will collect ideas and images to contribute to the making of your artwork.

To create images of your own inspired by the impressive influence of the surrounding environment, Paul will show you how to use mixed media and natural tools to make pictures.

Week Four: Felling / Carr Hill

Phoenix Flights, a paper folding workshop with professional artist, Bruce Tuckey:

In ancient folklore, the Phoenix is a powerful symbol of rebirth and renewal, rising from the ashes of its predecessor – it may be just what we need right now. In this session we will look at basic paper-folding techniques for making flying planes and families can create their own phoenix. There will be a walk around Shibdon Pond to look at the birds and other wildlife too.

Participants will also get a kit to take home for building and decorating an origami bird mobile.

Week Six: Central / Riverside

St Mary’s Heritage Centre

Photomontage workshop with professional artist and graphic designer, Tommy Anderson,

Using a selection of photographs from around Gateshead, you will be shown how to create your own unique cityscape photomontage. All materials and equipment will be provided, and you’ll also receive a creative pack to take home and make more stunning artwork in your own time.

The walk down to the Riverside will inspire you with the design and architecture that is all around us. Tommy Anderson’s inspiring designs show how we can see the places we live and explore in new ways. This workshop will show you how to layer images and create your own piece of fabulous graphic design.
